Coping Effectively with Stress and Trauma Exposure in your Legal Practice

This course aims to increase understanding of the causes of vicarious trauma and cumulative effects of working in professional fields like law, where exposure to trauma/violence/suffering are prevalent.

Depression has been found to occur in attorneys at rates of over three times the general work force. Moreover, research provides evidence of high levels of work addiction, perceived stress, job dissatisfaction, substance abuse, and secondary trauma symptoms among attorneys. The prevalence of unhappiness among attorneys not only results in disillusionment and career changes, but can also lead to inadequate client representation due to associated difficulties including reduced concentration, fatigue, disturbed sleep and poor motivation.

DAVID M. JOSEPH DAVID M. JOSEPH is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with an expertise in psychological trauma and PTSD. He has been providing assessment and treatment of veterans for 15 years, and lectures frequently on PTSD, trauma, and mental illness to a wide audience, including colleges, universities, police departments and conferences. He also provides forensic evaluations, with a particular emphasis on trauma and PTSD.
